The search for the successor to the Rt. Rev. William D. Persell, 11th Bishop of Chicago, began in June 2006 with the formation of a Bishop Search Committee. The profile of the diocese was published in December 2006 and nominations received in January and February 2007. A slate of five committee selected nominees was announced August 28, 2007; and three more nominees were added to the slate during a two week petition process. The full slate met with clergy and laity of the diocese during a five-day presentation held at six locations October 23 through 28, 2007. The 170th Annual Convention met November 9 and 10 at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel and Conference Center in Wheeling for conducting the regular business of convention and on November 10 for the election of the 12th Bishop of Chicago. The Rev. Jeffrey D. Lee, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Medina, Washington, was elected on the second ballot. Bishop Lee was ordained and consecrated bishop of Chicago on February 2, 2008 at the House of Hope Arena, Chicago.
