About us - Office of the Bishop

Bishops exercise general oversight of a diocese through their ministry as chief priest and pastor, prophet, and teacher. In the Episcopal Church (which takes its name from the Latin word for bishop, episcopus) bishops symbolize the unity of the church. In the Outline of the Faith (also known as The Catechism) in The Book of Common Prayer, the bishop is charged “to guard the faith, unity and discipline of the whole Church.” Two sacramental functions are reserved for bishops: confirmation and ordination. Chicago’s bishops exercise these sacramental ministries throughout the year at Ember Day ordinations in June and December, the ordination of deacons in February, area confirmations during the Easter season, and diocesan confirmation in June.
