The Whose Church is it Anyway? event is a two-day learning experience offered in collaboration with the Office of Youth, Campus & Young Adult Ministry.  What began as an event for youth ministers in our diocese has become a gathering of those who work with children, youth and adults not only in our own diocese but in the other dioceses of Province V.  The theme for the plenary sessions varies.  Learning experiences are interactive and include workshops, hands-on use of resources, experiencing a portion of a specific curriculum or program, brainstorming sessions for exploring questions and exchanging ideas and experiences.

In 2010, this program will be held August 27 - 28th,
at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Illinois.

Here is the 2010 Agenda for the Day

Here is a sample of 2009 list of Learning Opporunities

Our theme this year will take us back to basics, sort of.
Given the huge success of a local congregation’s adventure –  “The Good Book Club” –  which invited the whole congregation to read the Bible together over the course of the academic year, and given our own nascent work on the Catechumenate in the Diocese of Chicago, we decided that this year’s Christian Formation event would be a great opportunity to laser our focus on that perennial best-seller and [truth be told] sometimes-tentatively-tiptoed-up-to-tome for some Episcopalians: The Bible.

Although we will offer Learning Opportunities on a variety of topics in order to get participants up close and personal with curricula, processes and programs for every age level, we will be spotlighting the Bible both for plenary sessions and for some of the Learning Opportunities.

Our Keynoter and presenter of some Learning Opps, is Tracy Radocevic, President of the Network of Biblical Storytellers.  Given my own background and training, I’ve see and heard a lot of ‘biblical storytelling’ but Tracy is the real deal.  She incarnates the text in stunning and inviting ways; she ‘gets it’ and will assist us in getting it and getting that Word out.

We’ll also have some other Learning Opps directed toward other aspects of biblical education and formation.  Among them:

    • A team from “The Good Book Club” [Holy Spirit, Lake Forest] will describe their experience of this year, what they learned, what surprised them, what delighted them and more.  They will help participants to think through their own planning using Zondervan’s The Story.
    • Doing Bible Study with adults: a plethora of methods.
    • The Why and the How and the What of Miqra, a program of Bible reading, studying and wrestling, inaugurated in the Diocese of Chicago this past January and in the works for 2011.
    • Demonstration of a new curriculum on Bible Study for children published by Augsburg that has some of the best materials I’ve seen in a while on the subject.

So, save the dates now and plan to bring a team of folks to meet others as passionate about the ministry of assisting the People of God to continue to live out the Baptismal Covenant.

And along the way, fall in love again with the book we call ‘Holy’.

Our Other Yearly Events

Diocesan Convention

Learning opportunities have become a vital part of each Diocesan Convention.   Adults can choose from a rich variety of workshops each year on topics such as evangelism, cooperative ministry, Christian formation, peace and justice, leadership development, anti racism training, stewardship, fundraising, spirituality and mission.  Children ages 3-11 and Junior High students have parallel programs of their own based on that year’s convention theme.  The 2009 Annual Convention will be held November 19and 20th, 2010 at the Westin Hotel and Conference Center in Lombard.

Journey to Adulthood Leader Training

Congregations using this youth program will want to send new and current leaders, program coordinators, and clergy responsible for youth ministry to this one-day training. The session includes an introduction to the full program; introductions to each of the three segments (Rite 13, J2A-Journey to Adulthood, YAC-Young Adults in the Church); practical work on implementation (e.g., preparing the congregation, planning a pilgrimage); and opportunities to meet with other J2A leaders.  The training is held each year in the fall and at different congregations in the diocese.

Faith X-plorers (Confirmation Camp)

another collaboration with the Office of Youth, Campus & Young Adult Ministry, is a weekend event designed to allow Senior High youth the space and opportunity to grow as a Christian in a fun-filled outdoor setting.  The program is all about forming a relationship with oneself, others, and Jesus Christ, all as the participants prepare to accept the radical claim that they are Christ’s body on earth; in other words, that they are the church.

Keeping God’s People Safe

Offered through the Office of Pastoral Care, this training is required for all those who work with children, youth, and adults in our congregations. Learn more about Keeping God's People Safe.
