Bishop's Easter Appeal 2018

April 2, 2018

Dear Friends in Christ:

Alleluia! Christ is risen!

With these joyful words, we celebrate the resurrection, and through the power of the resurrection we participate in the transformation of the world. Like the disciples, the Risen Jesus sends us out into the world ready to share the good news.

When I travel around our diocese, I see transformation—the resurrection kind of change—at work in all kinds of congregations and communities. With your generous gift to the Bishop’s Appeal, we can invest in places where we see God working to create and sustain thriving congregations.

Recently I’ve seen transformation at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church/Iglesia Episcopal Santa Elena in Burr Ridge, where energetic leaders are using training and resources provided by the diocese and the wider Episcopal Church to unify the parish’s English-speaking and Spanish-speaking congregations. I am watching their growth with great joy.

At All Saints Episcopal Church in Moline, a congregation that risked much to remain faithful to the Episcopal Church has grown from a few devoted souls around a kitchen table altar to an active parish with a passion for outreach and liturgy. Through it all, people across the diocese have been by their side offering the tools of transformation—coaching, hands-on support, and even, in the early days, hand-me-down vestments and a chalice.

At St. Mark’s Glen Ellyn, where we invested in a burgeoning Latino ministry, I see transformation in the thriving bilingual congregation that is growing and attracting young families from across the community. Recently they were named one of the 100 “most awesome” churches in the country in a poll conducted by Teen Vogue magazine. I couldn’t agree more.

There’s more—so much more. With the right resources, we can provide tools for even more congregations to transform and thrive. Please join me in supporting God’s work across the Diocese of Chicago with a generous gift to the Bishop's Appeal by Pentecost Sunday, May 20.

The Rt. Rev. Jeffrey D. Lee
Bishop of Chicago
