A Visit from Companion Bishop Joseph Garang Atem

Companion Bishop Joseph Garang Atem, Diocese of Renk, South Sudan arrives in Chicago on September 9 at the invitation of St. Michael’s, Barrington, partner with Renk Theological College. During his visit he will meet with other partner parishes to update them on the current situations in S. Sudan.
Bishop Joseph will participate in the installation of Dean-elect Dominic Barrington, September 13, at St. James Cathedral; he will be the honored guest at St. Michael’s 5th annual South Sudan Soiree in support of RTC, September 26; he will participate in the Clergy Retreat October 11-13; he will attend the ECW Fall Meeting October 3 at St. Hugh of Lincoln, Elgin; and will visit several partners throughout the Diocese. Since December 2013 a power struggle between the President and Vice President of South Sudan has riddled the new country with displacement, death, and human rights abuses. Under pressure from the U.S., U.N., African Union and many other parties, finally, a peace agreement was signed between Salva Kiir and Riek Machar. Bishop Joseph asks for continued prayers that this peace will be a lasting peace.
