Dear friends in Christ:

Ever since that cold February day in 2008 when you welcomed me with a glorious ordination celebration, it has been a great privilege to serve God with you as your bishop. Now, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the counsel of those dearest to me, I believe it is time for you to choose someone new to carry this ministry into the future. Accordingly, I am writing today to announce my intent to retire eighteen months from now, in August 2020, and to call for the election of the thirteenth bishop of Chicago.

Searching for a new bishop—a process that will be led by the Standing Committee—will take all of that time and perhaps more. The work began last evening, when Bishop Todd Ousley, bishop for pastoral development on Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s staff, met by teleconference with the members of the Standing Committee. You will hear more from them soon about a timetable for the election and transition and the process for forming a bishop search committee.

When I reflect on the work we have done together, I am most grateful for our shared success in focusing the work of my staff and the diocese’s leaders on congregational vitality. As you have often heard me say, the only excuse for something like a diocese is to foster thriving congregations in local communities using the best data and resources we can muster. Together, through prayer and song and fierce conversations, we have accomplished that cultural shift, and it is bearing fruit across our region.

Together, too, we have made God’s love real in the world by making the Peoria Deanery a place of welcome to all of God’s children and a witness to the power of resurrection. We have made important progress toward repentance and reconciliation as we have reckoned with the legacy of slavery in our diocese. And we have sought to keep our baptismal promises as we have stood with LGBTQ people, with victims of gun violence, with immigrants and refugees, and with people of all sorts and conditions in need of God’s grace and healing. Many of you have devoted years of ministry to these efforts and other essential parts of our common life, and it has been a great joy to share and support what you have brought forth.

Although today marks the beginning of my transition to retirement, there is still much work for us to do together. In my remaining time as your bishop, I intend to do all I can to advance the excellent work of the Taskforce on Hispanic/Latino Mission and Ministry Sustainability, to forge a new partnership between the diocese and Episcopal Charities, and to attract energetic, talented clergy who want to join us in fostering vital congregations. Finally, I hope to leave a gift for the future vitality of God’s ministry in this place by increasing the diocese’s program endowment and supporting the capacity of congregations to raise capital funds.

Over and over again during my years as your bishop, we have gathered around the table in places large and small to be sustained by the nourishment of Jesus’ body and blood. As we travel together toward the place where our paths will diverge, I will cherish each remaining opportunity to celebrate the sacraments with you and to pray together for a time of transition filled with hope and trust in God’s never-failing goodness.

Desde aquel día frio en febrero 2008 cuando me acogieron con una ordinación gloriosa, ha sido un gran privilegio servir a Dios con ustedes como su obispo. Ahora, confiando en la dirección divina del Espíritu Santo y el consejo de mis seres queridos, creo que ya es hora de que ustedes escojan alguien nuevo para llevar este ministerio hacia el futuro. Por consiguiente, les escribo para anunciar mi intención de retirarme en dieciocho meses, en agosto 2020, y para pedir la elección del decimotercer obispo de Chicago.

La búsqueda de un obispo nuevo—un proceso dirigido por el Comité Permanente—requerirá todo ese tiempo y quizás más. El trabajo comenzó anoche, cuando el Obispo Todd Ousley, obispo de desarrollo pastoral del personal del Obispo Presidente Michael Curry, se reunió por teleconferencia con miembros del Comité Permanente. Pronto comunicarán más información sobre un cronograma de la elección y transición y el proceso de formar un comité para la búsqueda del obispo.

Cuando reflexiono sobre el trabajo que hemos realizado juntos, estoy más que agradecido por nuestro éxito común en enfocar el trabajo de mi personal y los líderes diocesanos en la vitalidad de las congregaciones. Como he dicho muchas veces, la única justificación para algo como una diócesis es fomentar congregaciones prósperas en comunidades locales para usar los mejores datos y recursos que podemos acumular. Juntos, por medio de oración y canto y conversaciones intensas, hemos realizado ese giro cultural, y está dando fruto en toda nuestra región.

Juntos, también, hemos hecho real el amor de Dios en el mundo haciendo el Decanato de Peoria un lugar de bienvenida a todos los hijos de Dios y un testigo al poder de resurrección. Hemos avanzado en maneras importantes hacia el arrepentimiento y la reconciliación al contar con el legado de esclavitud en nuestra diócesis. Y hemos intentado cumplir con nuestras promesas bautismales apoyando a las personas LGBTQ, las víctimas de violencia con armas de fuego, con inmigrantes y refugiados, y con personas de todas clases y condiciones que necesitan la gracia y sanación de Dios. Muchos de ustedes han dedicado años de ministerio a estos esfuerzos y otras partes esenciales a nuestra vida en común, y ha sido un gran placer compartir y apoyar lo que han creado.

Aunque hoy marca el inicio de mi transición a la jubilación, todavía queda mucho trabajo por hacer juntos. En lo que queda en mi tiempo como su obispo, intento hacer todo lo que pueda para avanzar el excelente trabajo del Grupo de Trabajo sobre la Sostenibilidad de la Misión y el Ministerio Hispano/Latino, para formar una nueva alianza entre la diócesis y Episcopal Charities, y de atraer a clérigos energéticos y talentosos que quieren unirse con nosotros en promover congregaciones vitales. Por último, espero dejar un regalo para la vitalidad futura del ministerio de Dios en este lugar aumentando la dotación de programas de la diócesis y apoyando la capacidad de congregaciones para recaudar fondos de capital.

Una y otra vez durante mis años como su obispo, nos hemos reunido alrededor de la mesa en lugares grandes y pequeños para ser sostenidos por el alimento del cuerpo y sangre de Jesús. Mientras viajamos juntos hacia el lugar donde nuestros caminos divergirán, apreciaré cada oportunidad restante de celebrar los sacramentos con ustedes y rezar juntos por un tiempo de transición lleno de esperanza y confianza en la bondad inagotable de Dios.
